Van Dyke Parks in GrazVan Dyke Parks and his accompanying musicians, Leland Sklar (bass) and Grant Geissman (guitar) performed at two venues in Graz, Austria during the last weekend of September, 1999. Their first appearance was in the afternoon of Saturday, 25 September - a free concert on the opening of the Graz avant garde festival, steirischer herbst 99. Their performance lasted about 45 minutes and was well-received by those in the audience interested in VDP and his music. The concert was also attended by a lot of local officials and people who simply came because the concert was for free. Unfortunately, some of those were completely uninterested in the performance and behaved impolitely towards their guests. The following night, also as part of the festival, the ensemble played in a local club, The Screen Club, for an enthusiastic audience of about 150 people. The performance lasted about 90 minutes, the atmosphere was much looser than during the first show, and a fine time was had by performers and audience alike. Below you find some photos and documents relating to those performances. (Is anybody reading these lines who transcribed a setlist of one of these shows? If you did, please contact me. - Thanks, J.J.)The three photos on this page were taken by E.G. Jansen (Thanks!).
